What Is Soapstone Carving?

Soapstone carving is the art of shaping a soft natural stone into sculptures, jewellery, and decorative objects using simple hand tools such as rasps, files, and sandpaper. Because soapstone is one of the softer carving stones, it can be shaped without heavy equipment, making it an excellent material for beginners while still appreciated by experienced artists.

Artists begin with a raw piece of stone and gradually carve away small amounts of material to reveal the desired form. The sculpture is then refined through sanding and polished with natural oils or wax, which brings out the rich colours and patterns unique to each stone. Every piece of soapstone is different, meaning each carving becomes a one-of-a-kind work of art.

Stone carving is one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world, practiced by cultures for centuries. Soapstone remains one of the most accessible ways to experience this timeless craft because it allows anyone to explore sculpture with simple tools and natural materials.
