Daily Carving Classes - Frequently Asked Questions

Discover one of Whistler’s most unique indoor activities. Our guided soapstone carving classes welcome visitors of all skill levels and offer a relaxing, hands-on creative experience in the heart of Whistler Village.

Do I need experience?

No experience is required. Our soapstone carving classes are designed for complete beginners as well as those with artistic experience. We guide you step by step through the carving process, from shaping the stone to sanding and polishing your finished sculpture. Most guests are pleasantly surprised by what they are able to create in just one class.

What if I’m not artistic? Can anyone do it?

That is perfectly fine. Many of our guests say they are “not artistic” before they begin. Soapstone is a soft, forgiving stone that is easy to shape, and our instructors guide you throughout the process. By the end of the session, nearly everyone leaves with a unique sculpture they are proud of.

Is it just for kids?

Not at all. Our classes are designed primarily for adults, couples, and visitors looking for a memorable Whistler activity. However, children often enjoy carving as well and families are welcome. The experience is suitable for a wide range of ages and skill levels.

My child is 5 or older, do I need to stay with them for the class?

No. Children ages 5 and up may participate independently in the class. Our instructors guide them through the carving process step-by-step in a safe and supportive environment, so they can enjoy creating their own stone sculpture.

How long are the classes?

Mini, pendant and stacked inukshuk classes run approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the detail of your design. Guests leave with a finished piece to take home the same day. Carved inukshuk, small, medium and large classes can take anywhere from 2-6+ hours to complete and can be finished over multiple days, or sessions.

What can I carve?

Guests can choose from a variety of designs such as:

• Inukshuks

• Whales

• Bears

• Mountains

• Hearts

• Seasonal designs

You are also welcome to create your own abstract sculpture or design, we do recommend simplicity though.

Is soapstone carving safe?

Yes. Soapstone is a soft stone that can be shaped using simple hand tools that are not sharp, making it a safe and accessible activity for beginners. With basic guidance and supervision, it’s an enjoyable creative experience for both adults and children.

Do I need to bring anything?

Everything is provided. Your class includes soapstone, professional carving tools, safety equipment, and polishing materials. Simply arrive ready to enjoy a creative experience and leave with a sculpture you carved yourself. We do recommend light coloured clothing that you are okay with getting a little dusty!

Is this a good activity if the weather is bad?

Yes. Soapstone carving is one of Whistler’s most popular indoor and rainy-day activities. It is also a great option for evenings, rest days from skiing, or anyone looking for a relaxing creative experience off the slopes.

Where are the classes located?

Classes take place at Fathom Stone Art Gallery in Whistler Village, surrounded by an inspiring collection of hand-carved stone sculptures and gemstone jewellery.
