A Unique Indoors Thing to Do in Whistler: Create Your Own Stone Sculpture

When most people think of Whistler, skiing, mountain biking and hiking immediately come to mind. But beyond the mountains, Whistler has a thriving arts scene and some wonderfully unexpected experiences waiting to be discovered.

If you're searching for a unique thing to do in Whistler, Fathom Stone Art offers a hands-on experience unlike almost anything else in the Village: the opportunity to carve your very own stone sculpture.

Recently featured by KAYAK in its Whistler travel content, Fathom Stone Art combines creativity, Canadian stone and traditional carving techniques into an experience you can take home with you.

More Than an Art Class — A Whistler Experience

Located in The Westin Resort & Spa Whistler, in the heart of Whistler Village, Fathom Stone Art is both a fine art gallery and working stone-carving studio.

Our carving classes invite guests to step behind the artwork and experience the process for themselves.

You'll begin by selecting your stone and choosing what you'd like to create. With guidance from our instructors, you'll then sketch, carve, file, sand and polish your piece until a raw piece of stone is transformed into a finished sculpture.

No previous carving or artistic experience is required.

The result is something much more meaningful than a traditional souvenir: a piece of Whistler you created with your own hands.

Choose Your Own Carving Experience

One of the things that makes our Whistler art classes unique is that there isn't just one project to choose from.

Depending on your age, interests and how much time you'd like to spend carving, you can create anything from a small pendant to your own stone sculpture.

Popular experiences include:

  • Pendant & Ornament Carving – A wonderful introduction to stone carving and an easy activity to fit into your Whistler itinerary.
  • Mini Sculpture Carving – Transform BC soapstone into your own small sculpture.
  • Small & Medium Sculpture Classes – Spend more time developing a detailed, one-of-a-kind piece.
  • Carved Inukshuk Classes – Create your own stone Inukshuk-inspired sculpture.
  • Stacked Stone Experiences – Select, shape, sand and assemble individual stones into a completely unique creation.

Every stone is naturally different, meaning no two finished pieces are ever exactly alike.

A Great Indoor Activity in Whistler

Whistler weather doesn't always cooperate with vacation plans.

Rainy summer afternoon? Rest day from mountain biking? Need a break from skiing? Looking for something to do while the rest of your group is on the mountain?

Stone carving offers an indoor, weather-independent activity that can be enjoyed year-round.

It's also a refreshing change of pace. Instead of watching or sightseeing, you're actually creating something.

One of Whistler's Most Unique Family Activities

Finding an activity that children, teenagers, parents and grandparents can genuinely enjoy together isn't always easy.

Stone carving is wonderfully universal.

Our classes are suitable for beginners and are designed so that each guest can work at their own ability level. Children can create simple, imaginative designs while adults can take their sculptures in a more detailed direction.

It's a particularly special experience for families because everyone leaves with their own piece — and their own interpretation of the day.

Not Just for Kids

One misconception about art classes is that they're primarily children's activities.

At Fathom Stone Art, adults are just as much a part of the experience.

Couples, groups of friends, corporate groups and solo travellers regularly join our classes. Carving is tactile, surprisingly relaxing and completely different from the typical Whistler itinerary.

For couples, it can even make for an unexpected Whistler date activity — especially when you each leave with a sculpture commemorating your trip.

Create a Souvenir That Actually Means Something

Whistler has no shortage of beautiful souvenirs.

But there's something different about bringing home an object you made yourself.

Your sculpture begins as a piece of stone. Over the course of your class, you slowly reveal its shape through carving, filing and sanding before oiling and polishing the finished work.

Long after your Whistler vacation is over, the sculpture remains a reminder not simply of where you travelled, but what you experienced while you were here.

Discover Whistler Beyond the Mountains

KAYAK's Whistler travel guide describes a destination with plenty to experience beyond the slopes — from dining and culture to year-round activities throughout the Village.

We couldn't agree more.

Whistler may be internationally known for its mountains, but some of the most memorable experiences happen when you slow down, try something completely different and discover another side of the community.

At Fathom Stone Art, that means sitting down with a piece of stone and discovering what you can create.
